[I] research[ed] accounting software tools suitable for small business and Sole traders 4 years ago. After realising I needed a much faster and convenient way to start filing taxes [recording my expenses], I discovered QuickBooks [...]. I could no longer manage using the old school Excel sheets to manage my business outgoings and sales. I also was looking for a tool that allowed me to stay mobile with access to a mobile app.
  • Create, send invoices and track online payments made from to clients on the go.
  • Connect with your [online] business bank accounts so that it records all [transactions] and expenses making it easy to access accurate and current business data.
  • Access information for Self-assessment purposes - making it easy and faster to submit your taxes.
  • [For] those that drive as part of their business, Quickbook allows you to also [record] mileage and snapshot real receipts to save for your records.
  • Reconnecting business account - I find it annoying as I find that I have to constantly reconnect QuickBooks with my business account to ensure it keeps my business data correct and update.
  • The invoice design has its limitations - you can not create invoices on brand due to the basic areas of design.
  • It's not a scaleable accounting software as it's geared towards small businesses, so at some point, a successful business that is growing will need to find alternative accounting software that meets their medium to large business accounting needs.
QuickBooks is a great tool for new SoleTraders that need basic accounting software and require digital invoicing for their clients to send via email and access key features via a mobile app on the go. QuickBooks is a straightforward tool to use with a simple design and learning curve for business owners that are not very tech-savvy.

For businesses that operate on a larger scale and need to provide access to other users on their team, QuickBooks is limited. This type of business may also require more insights into the business outside of accounting, and QuickBooks won't be able to supply insights outside of that.

  • Save on time - QuickBooks, once all up and running and integrated with your business account, is it much easier to access the information required to submit Self-assessment taxes
  • No Accountant required - with its ease of use and management, there is no need to pay for an accountant as you can manage it yourself.
  • Affordable - the monthly cost and initial QuickBooks offer for new users make it cost-effective and long-term, will not break the bank.
One of the key things that QuickBooks does well is making it so easy to get started, set, and use the basic features to manage your online business. The desktop version makes it easier to get a lot more done, such as creating business categories and connecting your bank account. I have recommended QuickBooks to others, knowing they will not face any extreme difficulties using accounting software for their small business.
I have never faced any difficulties that required me to contact QuickBooks customer service. QuickBooks has plenty of online tutorials, blog posts, and helpful tips and advice for almost any issues you may face using the desktop or app version of the software. Even if you can not find the right answer on the QuickBooks webpages, there are loads of YouTube videos from experts.

I currently run all of our business expenses and income through QuickBooks. The simple app on my phone allows me to swipe business and personal expenses, keeping all our finances separate and accounted for. Additionally, I can run invoices and reporting through QuickBooks which allows me to keep my clients on track with their monthly retainers.
  • Tracking expenses is as simple as swiping left and right, it couldn't be easier.
  • Running invoices through QuickBooks is simple and effective.
  • Allowing clients to pay by card or check allows you to get paid faster and give the clients multiple ways of paying invoices, which helps everyone.
  • Automatically tracking estimated quarterly taxes is very helpful and it keeps it top-of mind for each month.
  • Automatic mileage tracking used to work a lot better than it currently does. I got a new phone, and now I have to manually input call tracking, because it just doesn't work anymore.
  • When creating invoices, there should be a way to import data into an invoices from Excel, which would make the invoicing a lot faster. Additionally, being able to press ENTER to save a line item on an invoice would be nice. Currently it doesn't work that way.
  • Editing invoices shouldn't require sending a reminder.
Absolutely a must-have for small business owners. It connects to all your personal and business banking and credit accounts to keep your business and personal expenses separate. The design of the phone app makes tracking your expenses a little fun, honestly. The online desktop dashboard allows for enhanced features which helps you invoice and track client spends.

  • Overall, tagging expenses and mileage has saved me thousands in taxes, for a relatively low cost of around $8/mo.
  • QuickBooks allows me to get invoices to clients quickly and accept online payments, which helps with cashflow.
  • The app has stopped tracking mileage automatically on my device, so I worry that sometimes I am not tracking business miles effectively, which could end up costing me at the EOY.
Honestly, this was the only option for me when I launched my business. I didn't even look at different companies for account services, since QuickBooks Self-Employed had the features and benefits that I needed to run daily operations of my business. Eventually, I will need to upgrade to a higher-level of service, but I will stick with QuickBooks when the time comes to do that.

I use QuickBooks Self-Employed for my sole proprietor business. (I also use Quicken, which I find to be a little easier to manage, actually.) My main reason for choosing QuickBooks Self-Employed was the mileage tracking feature, as well as the ability to have transactions auto loaded. The mileage feature works pretty well, but the auto transaction feature tended to miscategorize many of the entries. This resulted in a lot of extra time spent.
  • QuickBooks Self-Employed does keep a running total of your income and estimated taxes. Of course, this requires that your entries are accurate.
  • The mileage feature is particularly helpful. One just needs to either use the phone app in conjunction with QuickBooks Self-Employed, or keep a log of all mileage.
  • When tax time comes around, it's easy to use TurboTax software and import your data from QuickBooks.
  • Automatic entries could be improved. QuickBooks Self Employed requires you to login every day or two to check on your entries to ensure they are in the correct category. You can mark certain entries for certain categories
  • I find the whole site to run a little slow. While going through and marking the entries to the correct category, the page will sometimes get stuck and entries won't update very quickly. It slows down the process.
  • Overall, QuickBooks has a fairly steep learning curve. It does try to intuitively do some things for you, but if you have to go and correct them, I think you spend more time, and it defeats the purpose of the software.
QuickBooks Self-Employed is a very detailed software to keep track of your finances and tax obligations. I'm reviewing the online version here and honestly, if you are into QuickBooks, it might be worth looking into the stand-alone software version. Ideally, if you work remotely, in various places and on more than one computer (desktop or laptop) then QuickBooks online is a good idea. But the slow interface is troubling to me and I spend a lot of time going through and correcting entries QuickBooks imports from my bank account. In fact, I've gone back to my stand-alone version of Quicken.

  • A positive impact on my business is, of course, keeping track of income and expenses, and approximate quarterly taxes. QuickBooks is a little better at this than Quicken, I think.
  • By using QuickBooks (and Quicken) it saves me having to spend money on an accountant. (At least up to this point.)
  • However, the time I spend on daily or weekly entries takes billable time away from other things.
Alternatively, I use Quicken to manage bank entries and create reports for tax purposes.
